Grammy-nominated, Emmy Award-winning director Sam Wrench, best known for working on Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (2023), has been appointed to helm Warner Bros.’ redo of the cult 1992 romantic thriller *The Bodyguard*, reports *The Hollywood Reporter*. The original movie, in which Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner starred, was a big hit. Casting for the remake has not yet been announced, but Jonathan Abrams, screenwriter of Clint Eastwood’s *Juror #2* (2022), is writing the script. A prior draft was penned by director and playwright Matthew López, and the film has been in development since 2011.

Wrench has a successful history with top pop artists. His *Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour* concert film was the all-time highest-grossing concert film, taking in $179.2 million over its nine-week theatrical run. It has taken in more than $250 million worldwide as of this time. The film was filmed on the first three nights of Swift’s *Eras* Tour at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Also, Wrench helmed *A Nonsense Christmas*, which was released on Netflix in 2023 and stars Sabrina Carpenter. He has also helmed work for big artists such as BTS, Lizzo, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, and Mary J. Blige. He was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Music Film category in late 2022 for his work on *Billie Eilish Live at the O2*.

The original *Bodyguard*, directed by Mick Jackson, was a massive global hit, grossing $411 million worldwide. Its soundtrack remains one of the best-selling and most iconic in history, with over 12.1 million copies sold. The album featured several hits, including “I’m Every Woman,” “I Have Nothing,” and the chart-topping classic “I Will Always Love You.”
